Location Sharing Feature May Be Coming to Google Messages!

Google Messages Is Getting New Location Features: Map Views and Traffic Information Could Be Added

Google is working on new features designed to improve the live location-sharing experience in its Messages app. A new development spotted in an Android beta version suggests that users may soon be able to change the map view and display traffic information directly within their conversations.

If these options become publicly available, users could access more detailed map information while checking the location of friends or family without having to leave Google Messages.

Google Messages Could Offer More Map Options

Google Messages already supports live location sharing, allowing users to share their real-time location through a conversation for a specified period. However, the map interface currently offers limited customization options.

According to Android Authority, a new map layers button was discovered in a beta version of the Android app. This button could allow users to choose between different map views.

The options identified in testing include three map types:

  • Default view: Displays the standard map layout.

  • Satellite view: Helps users examine buildings, roads, and surrounding areas through satellite imagery.

  • Terrain view: Makes geographical features and changes in elevation easier to identify.

These options could make shared locations easier to understand and help users identify specific places on the map.

Live Traffic Information Could Also Be Added

Another feature being tested is an option to display traffic information on the map. This could help users see road conditions while viewing someone's shared live location.

For example, users might be able to check a friend's location and examine traffic conditions around them without switching to another application. This could also make it easier to evaluate potential routes when planning to meet someone.

The changes could bring Google Messages' mapping experience closer to some of the features available in Google Maps. However, the exact functionality of these options has not yet been confirmed for the final release.

Live Location Sharing Is Already Available

Google introduced live location sharing as part of its Android ecosystem in March 2026. Users can share their real-time location through the attachments menu in Google Messages.

Location sharing can be configured to last for one hour, until the end of the day, or until the user manually turns it off. Users can also select a specific duration.

The newly discovered map options are expected to build on this existing functionality. In other words, the update is not an entirely new location-sharing service but a potential improvement to the current experience.

When Will the New Features Be Available?

The map layers and traffic information options were spotted in a beta version of Google Messages. Google has not yet announced an official release date for these features.

Features discovered in beta versions can change during development or be postponed to a later update. As a result, it is too early to say exactly when the new options will become available to all Android users.

Google's efforts to improve location sharing in Messages reflect the growing role of messaging apps beyond traditional text and media communication.

If map customization and traffic information become available, users could explore shared locations in greater detail without leaving their conversations. The official release date and final feature set remain unconfirmed.
