Apple Tests New OLED Technology for Brighter Displays

Apple continues to explore advanced OLED display technologies to deliver improved visual quality in future iPhone, iPad, and Mac models. The company's display suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display, are developing new manufacturing methods designed to produce brighter and more efficient panels.

According to information reported on November 3, 2026, Apple is closely monitoring developments aimed at improving OLED panel manufacturing processes. If these technologies prove successful, future Apple devices could benefit from higher brightness levels and enhanced image quality.

New Manufacturing Technologies for OLED Displays

Two manufacturing methods are at the center of these developments: Sputtering and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD).

Sputtering uses plasma to transfer specific materials onto a surface in thin layers. ALD, on the other hand, involves applying gaseous materials to a surface in a highly controlled process. Both methods can help create more precise and advanced layers during OLED panel production.

Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly researching both technologies. However, Sputtering is receiving greater attention because it may be easier to integrate into existing manufacturing processes.

Higher Brightness and Improved Image Quality

One of the most significant potential benefits of these manufacturing methods is the ability to achieve higher brightness levels in OLED displays.

The improvements may extend beyond maximum brightness. Better contrast, improved color performance, and enhanced visibility under different lighting conditions could also become possible.

Higher display brightness would be particularly beneficial for users who operate their phones and tablets outdoors under direct sunlight. The deep blacks and high contrast associated with OLED technology could also benefit from these manufacturing improvements.

HMO Technology Is Also Under Development

Another important part of the research involves High Mobility Oxide (HMO), a thin-film transistor technology.

HMO can help the transistors responsible for controlling display pixels operate more efficiently. Electron mobility in this technology is reportedly three to five times higher than in conventional solutions.

Faster transistors could contribute to the development of displays with higher refresh rates. This could be particularly important for technologies such as Apple's ProMotion, which supports variable refresh rates.

When Will Apple Devices Get This Technology?

The exact release date and the Apple devices that will feature these new OLED manufacturing methods have not yet been confirmed. While Samsung Display and LG Display continue their development efforts, Apple is expected to evaluate these technologies for future display orders.

Apple's broader plans to expand OLED technology across more product categories make these developments particularly significant. Following its iPhone and iPad Pro models, OLED adoption could gradually expand to the iPad mini, iPad Air, and MacBook families.

However, the new manufacturing methods are unlikely to reach every Apple product simultaneously. Production costs, panel manufacturing efficiency, and quality standards will play important roles in determining which devices receive the technology first.

The Future of OLED Displays Could Change

Apple's work with its display suppliers demonstrates that OLED technology is not only becoming more widespread but also continuing to evolve through improvements in manufacturing methods.

Higher brightness, better contrast, and more efficient production processes could bring significant improvements to future smartphone and computer displays. Although it remains unclear when Apple will introduce these technologies into its products, competition in the display industry is expected to intensify in the coming years.
