Does an Electric Car Lose Charge When Parked for a Long Time?

Electric vehicles are designed to consume very little energy when they are not being driven. However, leaving an electric car parked for weeks or months does not mean that the battery level will remain exactly the same.

Even when the vehicle is switched off, certain electronic systems can continue operating in the background. As a result, the battery may gradually lose some charge over time.

Why Does an Electric Car Use Energy While Parked?

Turning off an electric vehicle does not necessarily shut down every electronic component.

Security systems, alarms, keyless entry, battery management systems, connected services, and various control modules may remain active or periodically wake up.

Features that allow owners to check the vehicle remotely through a smartphone application can also require the vehicle to maintain a connection with external services.

Because of these systems, a small amount of energy can be consumed while the vehicle is parked.

How Much Charge Can an Electric Car Lose?

The amount of energy consumed while parked varies considerably between vehicles.

Battery capacity, software, ambient temperature, connected services, security systems, and the vehicle's power management technology can all affect standby consumption.

Modern electric vehicles are designed to minimize this consumption. Nevertheless, even a small amount of energy loss can become noticeable if the vehicle remains unused for several weeks or months.

Cold Weather Can Affect the Battery

Temperature is another important factor.

Very low temperatures can reduce battery efficiency, and some electric vehicles may activate thermal management systems to keep the battery within an appropriate temperature range.

This process can consume additional energy even when the vehicle is not being driven.

Extremely hot conditions can also cause the vehicle to activate battery cooling systems to protect the battery from excessive temperatures.

Should You Leave an EV at 100% Charge?

Keeping an electric vehicle at 100% charge for an extended period is generally not considered the ideal approach for battery longevity.

Lithium-ion batteries can experience additional chemical stress when they remain at very high states of charge for long periods.

For this reason, manufacturers often recommend a specific charge level when a vehicle will be stored for an extended period. The recommended level can vary between models, so the manufacturer's instructions should always be followed.

Completely Emptying the Battery Is Also a Bad Idea

The opposite approach can also create problems.

Leaving an electric vehicle with a very low battery level for a long period can be risky because the vehicle continues to consume small amounts of energy while parked.

Over several weeks or months, this standby consumption can gradually reduce the battery level to a critical point.

Allowing the battery to remain completely discharged for an extended period can potentially create more serious battery management issues and may prevent the vehicle from operating normally.

What Should You Do Before Leaving an EV Parked?

If you plan to leave your electric vehicle unused for an extended period, there are several precautions worth taking.

First, charge the battery to the level recommended by the manufacturer for long-term storage. Try to keep the vehicle in an environment that is not exposed to extreme heat or cold.

It can also be useful to avoid unnecessarily waking the vehicle through its smartphone application. Frequently checking the car remotely may cause some systems to become active and increase standby consumption.

For storage periods lasting several months, the manufacturer's long-term storage instructions should take priority.

Can an Electric Car Be Parked for Months?

Yes. Electric vehicles can remain parked for long periods, but leaving one completely unattended for several months is not ideal.

If you know that the car will not be used for an extended period, its battery level should be checked periodically when possible.

Setting the initial charge level correctly is particularly important when the vehicle will remain unused for several months.

Does Parking Damage the Battery?

Simply leaving an electric car parked does not automatically damage its battery.

The bigger concern is the combination of extremely high or low charge levels, extreme temperatures, and prolonged storage.

A properly stored electric vehicle should be able to remain parked for an extended period without significant problems. Following the manufacturer's recommended storage procedures is the safest approach.
