How to Understand If There is a Virus on the Computer?

If you’re noticing strange behavior on your computer, it could be a sign that malware (a virus) has infected your system. Below are the most common signs that your computer might be compromised.

1. Computer Has Slowed Down

A computer that suddenly runs much slower than usual is one of the most common signs of a virus. If programs take longer to open or your system responds slowly, be cautious.

2. Programs and Pop-Ups Open on Their Own

If new tabs open in your browser without your action, unknown programs appear on your desktop, or you’re bombarded with pop-up ads, it’s a strong indicator of malware.

3. High Disk and Memory Usage

Check Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac). If your CPU, disk, or RAM usage is unusually high even when idle, malware might be running in the background.

4. Antivirus Warnings Appear

If your antivirus keeps detecting threats, take it seriously. But note that some viruses can also disable your antivirus software.

5. Files Are Missing or Encrypted

If your files suddenly disappear, get renamed, or you can’t open them, this could be a sign of ransomware.

6. Internet and Email Issues

Frequent disconnections, or suspicious emails being sent from your account without your knowledge, can indicate a virus infection.

7. Changed Settings

If your browser homepage has changed, your search engine is different, or system settings have been altered without your permission, stay alert.

What to Do If You Suspect a Virus

• Run a full system scan with a trusted antivirus program.

• Uninstall suspicious programs from Control Panel or Settings.

• Check browser extensions and remove unknown add-ons.

• Backup your important files and consider a system restore.

If the problem persists, it’s best to seek professional help.
